New Scout Finances

We request that new scouts open their account with a $100.00 deposit. This will cover dues and expenses for many of their smaller outings. However, if your boy decides to participate in many of the fun activities this busy troops offers, this balance will be rapidly depleted and you may want to keep their account balance in the $250.00 - $300.00 range.

Fundraising:
The troop's main fundraiser is the selling of holiday greens. The profit margin is about 50% and goes directly into their individual account. The boys sell greens in Oct. and deliver them the first week of Dec. The troop also spends 1 or 2 weekends selling greens at the doors of Woodlands Markets where participating scouts share the profits based on the number of hours they man the selling stations. Quite a few boys have paid for all their scouting activities out of the proceeds of these sales.

Troop Expenses:
Annual troop dues: This covers council and national dues as well as troop dues $60.00

Troop Outings: These occur 1 - 3 times per month and vary in cost. When the outing is announced and sign-ups are taken, an estimated cost will be provided by the trip leader. Your scout's account will be charged for the full cost of the event unless they can find someone to fill their slot or they notify the trip leader of their cancellation before non-refundable expenses have been incurred. For the more pricey outings, those costing more than $50, we ask that you pay for the trip in advance. Alternatively, you can verify with the troop treasurer in advance of the outing, that your scout's account has a sufficient balance to cover his costs.

To give you a sense of what your scout's budget for a year might be, below is a list of outings and their costs for 2003. Participation varies and not every outing is appropriate for every scout.
